The Best Suit Color for Your Skin Tone (Find Yours in 2 Minutes)

Oct 28, 2026

By Randy Willard

Navy, gray and black work on every man on the planet. Beyond those three, the best suit color for you depends on your skin tone, your hair and your eyes. The same jacket that fires one man up can quietly wash out the man standing next to him.

So don't guess. Look at the colors on a real person, then find the ones made for you. Below are six of my own looks and what each color does. Then take two minutes and find yours.

What is your skin tone?

Tap yours to start. Four questions, two minutes, free. You get the suit colors I'd pick for you, ranked for the rooms you walk into.

Randy's rule: Don't buy the color you saw on someone else. Buy the color you see on you, in daylight, in the mirror.

Six looks, six colors

Every one of these is me, and I have fair skin. Notice how much the color of the suit, and of the tie next to the face, changes the whole impression.

Which of these would work on you? That depends on your coloring, and it's exactly what the Suit Color Finder works out for you.

Why the same color looks different on different men

Brown is a strong color, and it's the one most men overlook. On fair skin like mine, it brings out a strong look. It fires up. Now picture a gentleman from Dubai with brown, olive skin. Put him in the same brown and it doesn't fire up on him the same way. It washes him out in subtle ways, because it isn't getting the most out of his color tone.

It works the other way too. You flip through a magazine and see a man in a soft peach jacket, and it pops on him. You go and buy one, stand in front of the mirror, and you look like you've seen a ghost. On darker skin, peach is warm and alive. On fair skin like mine, it drains everything.

Same jacket, same cut, completely different result. That's the whole lesson of color.

The best suit colors for each skin tone

Here's where each coloring usually lands. Use it as a starting point; the Color Finder narrows it down to you.

Your coloring Always works Fires you up Approach with care
Fair, cool Navy, gray, black Brown, purples, a strong pink Soft peach
Light to medium, neutral Navy, gray, black Try both lists in the mirror Let the mirror decide
Olive, warm Navy, gray, black Soft peach Brown
Deep, dark Navy, gray, black Soft peach Let the mirror decide

The suit doesn't have to carry every color on that list. Purples, pinks and peach often work best in a shirt, a tie or a sport coat, right next to your face.

Find your undertone in 30 seconds

How light or dark you are matters less than your undertone. Check it in natural daylight, not under the bathroom lights.

  • Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist. Blue or purple veins point to a cool undertone. Green veins point to warm. A mix of both means neutral.
  • Think about jewelry. If silver flatters you more than gold, that's another cool-tone clue.
  • Think about the sun. Fair skin with pink or rosy tones burns easily. Olive skin with golden tones tans easily.

Still not sure? You don't need to be. The Suit Color Finder walks you through it and does the matching for you.

Five color combinations I wear

Once you know your colors, this is how you put them to work. Each of these is a combination from my own wardrobe.

Gray suit, soft gray, a touch of green. Pick up the pinstripe in a very soft gray and add some green. It warms up the tones of the gray suit.

Navy suit, ivory shirt, brown shoes. Ivory instead of white neutralizes the whole presentation, and the brown shoe finishes it.

Medium blue suit, ivory shirt, patterned tie. My change of pace suit has a soft red pinstripe, and the tie picks up the suit's colors in an abstract way. Never a striped tie on a striped suit.

Gray trousers, purple shirt, purple pocket square. Purple brings real expression to an outfit that would otherwise be drab.

Desert tan suit, candy-stripe shirt, brown shoes. A summer look, finished with a tie chosen so it doesn't fight everything else.

As a stylist, I'm always looking for a third color that takes the whole look into the wow category, not something monochromatic. Let the pocket square contrast instead of blending in. And have fun with it: don't be afraid to mix a stripe with a paisley. I don't care what color your skin is; when you lose that sense of fun with your clothes, your whole fashion world is dead in the water.

Start with the three that work for everyone

If you're building a wardrobe from scratch, the safe colors are also the foundation: two business grays, a lighter gray for summer, a solid navy, a summer blue and a black suit for the evening. I walk through the five suits every CEO needs in my free CEO Masterclass. Then add your colors in sport coats, shirts and neckwear. And remember that color can't rescue a bad fit; get the shoulders and collar right first. My free Perfect Suit Checklist gives you the eight points I check on every suit.

Frequently asked questions

What suit color looks good on everyone?
Navy, gray and black. They work for every skin tone, which is why they belong at the center of every wardrobe.

How do I find my best suit colors?
Take the free Suit Color Finder. Answer four questions about your skin, hair and eyes, and in about two minutes you get the suit colors Randy would pick for you.

What color suit is best for olive skin?
Navy, gray and black are always safe. A soft peach jacket can look great on olive and darker skin. Be careful with brown, which can wash olive skin out.

What color suit is best for fair skin?
Navy, gray, black and brown all work, and fair skin can carry purples and a strong pink in shirts and neckwear. Soft peach tends to drain fair skin.

What color suit is best for dark skin?
Navy, gray and black always work. A soft peach jacket is a color darker skin carries well, where it would wash out fair skin.

Can a man with fair skin wear a brown suit?
Yes. Brown is one of the strongest colors on fair skin, and one of the most overlooked.

How do I know if my undertone is warm or cool?
In daylight, look at the veins on your inner wrist. Blue or purple suggests cool, green suggests warm, and a mix suggests neutral. Silver flattering you more than gold is another cool-tone sign.

Fit is the first decision. The CEO Wardrobe is the whole system.
